In 1864, Hawthorne traveled to New Hampshire with President Franklin Pierce. He died on May 19 and is buried at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA. By 1846, the Hawthorne family was living back in Salem with Una (1844) and Julian (1846). Colonel Pyncheon craved land owned by another man – Matthew Maule so he took it. During the Salem Witch Trials, people were brutal and if you wanted your neighbour’s land, all you had to do to get it was to accuse them of witchcraft. Any suspected witch would have their land instantly taken away from them. In 1668, sea captain John Turner built a multi-room house on the Salem waterfront. Three generations of Turners lived in the home, increasing its size and the family’s wealth, until John Turner III lost everything and the house was sold to another mariner, Samuel Ingersoll, in 1782. Upon Ingersoll’s death, daughter Susanna inherited the great mansion, where she was often visited by her younger cousin, Nathaniel Hawthorne.

During the time Nathaniel stayed there, it had been renovated by the Ingersoll’s to represent a more modern house with three gables. His cousin showed Nathaniel pictures of the house in its previous state, which inspired him to write The House of the Seven Gables. The original house, which is also called the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, was built in 1668 by Sea Captain John Turner, a successful fishing and trading industry leader. Thanks to his prosperous career, Turner was able to make two major additions to his home. If you take a tour, you’ll see remnants of construction in the attic. You’ll also find a smaller version of the house showing you what it originally looked like before the additions.
The street is Pyncheon Street; the house is the old Pyncheon House; and an elm-tree, of wide circumference, rooted before the door, is familiar to every town-born child by the title of the Pyncheon Elm. To get a sense of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s imagination, consider a walk at dusk along a 2.3-mile path in Salem Woods — a 12-minute drive from The Gables. It’s in a forest somewhere on the outskirts of early Salem that one of Hawthorne’s most famous short story characters, Young Goodman Brown, encounters an evil that destroys his faith in humanity. At dusk, writes Hawthorne, Young Goodman Brown sets off on “a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest.” But you won’t find evil in these woods. Instead, you’ll find a fun, hour-long hike, easy in spots with some short elevations.

The House of the Seven Gables has been a center of Salem’s community for over a century – sharing a rich history with visitors from around the globe and providing educational resources for people in Greater Salem. At age 9, Hawthorne injured his leg and was confined to the home for two years. It was during this time that he developed a love of books and reading. At age 14, the family left Salem for Raymond, Maine, but Hawthorne would return just one year later to begin his preparation for college entrance. His classmates included Franklin Pierce and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Many interesting features of the original mansion remain, including unusual forms of wall insulation, original beams and rafters, and extensive Georgian paneling. Horace Ingersoll, Susanna's adopted son, told Hawthorne a story of Acadian lovers that later inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 poem Evangeline. A few years later, a kitchen lean-to and a new north kitchen ell to the rear of the house were added. By 1676, Turner had added a spacious south (front) extension with its own chimney, containing a parlor on the ground floor, with a large bed chamber above it. Ceilings in this new wing are higher than the very low ceilings in older parts of the house.
